How To Submit Your Bike Route
Ride your bike to work or school in the Triangle? Help new cyclists, or cyclists new to the area, by submitting your favorite route(s) here for them to view.
To submit a route for inclusion on the Bike Routes page, please:
1. Map it online using one of the following:
- http://www.sanoodi.com/ (Note: shows a graph of elevation changes along the route and allows routes to be designated as cycling routes. Based on g-maps.)
2. Save the map and submit the URL, route name (WalkJogRun only) and a general route description, along with your name to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
3. We will post routes by city (both origin and destination) and will list the first name and last initial of the submitting cyclist.
More info about using the mapping sites:
Two of the suggested mapping sites work in very similar ways. More complete step-by-step instructions are listed below under WalkJogRun, Google Maps Pedometer, and Sanoodi.
1. Zoom in on your area of interest, either by zip code, city name, or
by clicking your cursor on the map in the area you wish to focus. Both
maps also have a navigation feature which allows users to move the map
in the four directions.
2. To create a map, place your cursor at the starting point and click
the mouse (WalkJogRun and Sanoodi use a single click - Google maps uses
double clicks - see complete descriptions below). Move your mouse to
the next point along your route and click again. The program draws a
straight line between click points, so you will need to click each time
the route turns, even if it stays on the same road.
Sanoodi
- To start, create a log in and click on “New Activity” at the page
top. Click “draw new route on a map”. To find your starting point,
scroll down to “Find addresss” below the world map and enter your home
address. Use the zoom and directional feature on the left of the map to
zoom in or out and move the map until you can comfortably map your
route using single clicks at each turn along the way. If you make a
mistake, click “undo” at the right to remove your last click. When
complete, click “save” to the right and enter the requested info, such
as name of the route, location (city, state), and activity. For
activity, use the pull down menu and click on Cycling. Add any comments
you wish and scroll to the page bottom to click on “Save routes to
Sanoodi.” Send both your beginning zip code, the route name, and the
URL of your new route (shown at the top of the page you after you name
and save your route) to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
WalkJogRun
uses a single click at each point along the route. To begin, enter your
zip code on the right and then use the zoom and directional feature on
the left of the map to zoom in or out and move the map until you can
comfortably map your route. Sign in before you start, as you must be
signed in to save a route. Click “Create a Route” and then click on the
beginning point of you route, move the cursor to the next point along
the route and click once. Continue until the map is complete. When you
are finished, click Save and name your route. Send both your beginning
zip code, the route name, and the URL of your new route (shown at the
top of the page you after you name and save your route) to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
Google Maps Pedometer requires a double click at each point along the route to map it. To begin, enter your zip code in the “Jump to” box and then use the zoom pull down box to zoom in or out until you can map your route comfortably. Click the “Start Recording” button on the left and double click to start and record each leg of the trip. When you are finished, click “Save route” and it will show the URL of the route you just created. Send your home zip code and this URL to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
3. When your route is complete, save it as described above and send your beginning point (home) zip code, and the name and URL of your route (if WalkJogRun) or the URL of your route (if google maps) to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
More information about your mapping options:
Google Maps Pedometer
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
is based on Google maps and is intended mapping local walking or
jogging routes in order to determine distance. While this is a great
way to map, save, and print a route, and it allows saved routes to be
linked externally, it does not allow users to search and display the
routes of others on the website. If your route is mapped on
gmap-pedometer, we will link to the route on this page.
WalkJogRun.net
http://www.walkjogrun.net/
is also based on Google maps and intended as a site for mapping out
local jogging or walking routes. You can search by zip code or city, so
it’s great for joggers looking for a pleasant run in a city they’re not
familiar with. Basically, you zoom in on the area where you wish to
start running or cycling, and look for yellow diamonds. These are the
starting points for mapped routes. Clicking on a diamond shows the
route. If your route is mapped on WalkJogRun.net, we will link to the
route on this page, and also list it by name so that others can search
for it.
