Carpool Tips

New to the Pool?

There’s nothing to be scared about. Starting a carpool can be simple and fun. Getting ready to dive in?  Remember to test the water first.

It’s a good idea to establish a trial period for your new carpool – about 2 weeks – so you can see if it works for everyone.  Carpooling should be fun and easy.  Remember you can always withdraw if it’s not working.

Many new carpoolers get together beforehand to meet in person before deciding how to proceed.

When deciding where to meet, think about the most convenient place for everyone.  We recommend meeting in a neutral location, such as a nearby grocery store.  This may even be the spot where you leave your car to carpool.

Many Triangle-area carpoolers get permission to park at shopping centers. There are also many Park-and-Ride lots throughout the Triangle that carpoolers can use for free!

Details and communication are critical to successful carpooling.

Before starting, determine how costs will be split.  Equally sharing the driving is the easiest option, since no money needs to change hands.  However, if the driving is not equal, decide how much riders will pay.  Be sure to consider gas, wear and tear, and parking costs.

Agree on a driving schedule and departure time, as well as decide how long the driver will wait.  If you know you will be late or not riding, be courteous by letting your carpool partner know as soon as possible.  Remember to exchange cell phone numbers!

Lastly, discuss personal preferences before the first day:

  • Do you smoke?
  • Can you eat or drink in the car?
  • Do you want the radio on or off?  What do you like to listen to?

We offer these simple guidelines to help ensure your carpool is a success. Enjoy the ride!
