Transit Plan

There are big plans in the Triangle Region’s future. See below for short- and long-term planning happening in the area.

August 2010 Service Change Proposals

Chapel Hill Transit, Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA), and Triangle Transit have developed service change proposals that would better coordinate the service options provided in the US 15-501 corridor between Chapel Hill and Durham. Descriptions of these proposals can be found here.

Triangle Transit has also developed significant service change proposals intended to accomplish the following goals:

  • To improve service reliability and on-time performance (affecting Routes 402, 403, 412, 413 and Saturday routes),
  • To simplify route designs and the route naming/numbering system (affecting Routes 402, 403, 412, 413, 105, night and Saturday routes),
  • To improve transfer connections between Triangle Transit and DATA, and
  • To provide direct service to RDU airport from downtown Raleigh (affecting Routes 105 and 747).

The Triangle Transit proposals addressing these goals are described here. These proposals also affect the timing of transfers at the Regional Transit Center, therefore, creating schedule changes for Routes 201, 301, 311, and all RTP shuttles.

If approved, these proposed service changes would be implemented in August 2010.

Capital Area Transit and C-Tran do not have any proposed service changes at this time.

Future rail services in the Triangle Region

The region’s two regional transportation planning organizations have recently adopted long-range plans that anticipate major new investments in public transportation:

  • 51 miles of light rail stretching from North Raleigh to Cary, the Research Triangle Park, Durham and Chapel Hill
  • A major expansion of local bus service in Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh and along Triangle Transit routes
  • Increased express bus service from outlying areas into center cities

Triangle Regional Map

The effort to add more bus and light rail service highlights the combined work of the Durham Chapel Hill Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization, Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Triangle J Council of Governments, Triangle Transit, Regional Transportation Alliance and the Special Transit Advisory Commission. The Special Transit Advisory Commission (STAC) was a citizens’ group appointed by the two metropolitan planning organizations to develop a regional transit vision plan.

STAC material can be found here: http://www.transitblueprint.org/
